Hot Stones

Anyone who is interested in bodywork will no doubt come upon some type of heated stone therapy. This is an age-old therapy dating back 5000 years to India and most certainly even the Mayan culture.

Stone therapy came from healers using rocks from the riverbeds and warming them either in hot coals or hot water. By placing the heated stones on cloth on the body and arranging them along the energy centers of the body, a healing process would occur. The heated stones have a tendency to relax the muscles and draw out muscle pain and discomfort.

The heated stones seem to connect the flow or paths of energy together in order to rebalance the physical body, emotional mind and soaring spirit as one. As the stones cool, the healer replaces them with heated stones again. The feet are extremely energy sensitive and are also stimulated with heated stones.

As in Reflexology, the entire body can be seen "reflected" in the feet. Heated Stone Therapy works with tiny River Rocks between the toes to de-stress and stimulate the nerve endings in the feet. Heated Stone Therapy was utilized by many cultures across Europe and within the Native American tribes as well.

Stone Massage Therapy has found new life in the West within the last 10 years. In my own version of Heated Stone Massage, I incorporate the stones into my regular massage as a way of bringing warmth into tired, tense muscles. This makes the muscles more supple and easier for me to go deeper with my touch. It's a wonderful treat, bringing healing warmth to those gray drizzly days in Seattle!

When receiving Heated Stone Therapy, as with any bodywork, remember to drink plenty of water before and after the massage. This will help your body clear out any toxins or negative energy that has been stirred up by the treatment.

Be warm, and be well!
